Pulsar IPL Hair Removal
This treatment provides efficient and effective hair reduction for the face and body. Face IPL uses energy from a light source, which is taken up by the pigments in the skin, hair and blood vessels. The hair is removed by using the light to generate heat in the melanin in the hair, which is transferred to the follicle to destroy it. The light is quickly passed over the area treating many hairs with one pulse. This treatment is non-invasive with no down time or after effects. A course of treatments is necessary since hair follicles have a specific growth cycle.
Pulsar is a revolutionary third generation Intense Pulsed Light system that has been clinically proven to permanently reduce hair growth.
The procedure quickly and efficiently eliminates hair from all parts of the body and face and is suitable for virtually all hair and skin types, including dark-skinned clients.

Frequently asked Questions re IPL
How does Intense Pulsed Light/Laser work?
The Intense Pulsed Light system releases precisely controlled strong pulses of light that are absorbed by melanin, the pigment in hair. This heats up the hair and destroys the cells responsible for hair growth, achieving long term hair reduction.
How is this treatment carried out?
A layer of chilled gel is applied to the area to guide the light into the skin. The area will also be cooled to increase comfort during treatment. The light guide is placed on the skin and a short pulse of light is released targeting many follicles simultaneously. The applicator is then moved to the neighbouring area of skin and the process is repeated until the entire area is treated. The gel is removed and a soothing aloe vera is applied.
Am I suitable for treatment?
Yes, the ideal patient is fair skinned with dark hair but there is much evidence to show that through carefully researched settings, results can be achieved for different hair and skin types. The darker the hair the more easily it is treated, as darker hair contains more melanin it will heat up more easily. Fairer hair contains less melanin and is harder to treat. Grey or White hair has no melanin so cannot be effectively treated.
How does the treatment feel?
No anaesthesia is required and most clients don't experience any discomfort at all. Sensations vary but most describe it as a very short flick on the skin.
What will I see after the treatment?
The hair follicles are damaged by heat but the hairs remain in the follicles. The hairs fall out after 1-3 weeks as the epidermis renews. During this period the hair will seem to 'grow' as they are pushed out by the new epidermis. After treatment the hairs are loose in the follicle and can sometimes be easily pulled out with tweezers.
Are there any side effects?
The skin may become red immediately after treatment, although most clients don't experience any side effects. Any skin reaction usually disappears within a few hours.
How many treatments are necessary?
Only hair in the active growth stage of the growth cycle is affected, therefore multiple treatments are needed. Treatment is conducted every 6 to 8 weeks, depending on the site treated, until a satisfactory result is seen. The number of treatments required varies but typically 6 or more treatments are required for maximum results.
How long does each treatment take?
Treatments can take from 15 mins to an hour, depending on the area being treated.
How should I prepare for an IPL treatment?
Hairs in the area to be treated should be 1 to 2 mm long. The treated area is shaved prior to treatment to maximise the transmission of the IPL energy. Long hairs absorb the light and can prevent penetration of the follicle. If you normally shave the area to be treated, you can continue to shave up to the day of treatment. You must not pluck, wax or bleach the area. Avoid epilation and waxing 4 weeks prior to your treatment. This ensures as many follicles as possible contain a hair which can be destroyed by the light. Tanning should also be avoided 1 month prior to treatment and during the entire treatment process. After the course you should avoid strong sun light for 4-5 days as the treated skin is particularly sensitive to UV and sun light. On the day of the treatment avoid use of deodorants, perfumed products or aromatherapy oils.
A patch test will be carried out at least 24 hours before the time of treatment time.
How much does it cost?
IPL treatments begin with a complimentary consultation to assess your individual needs and your suitability for the treatment. Your consultant will advise you of any necessary programme of treatment and the costs involved.
